What We Do

Positive Image offers a wide range of photographic activities for our members to get involved with.

Practical Sessions

Learning new skills is integral to all our activities. Practical sessions help members develop these skills in a supportive environment. The use of equipment, understanding more about different types of photography, and post processing are just some of the topics we regularly cover. Our club room functions not only as a meeting place, but can be reorganised to allow for various indoor practical sessions, such as creative and experimental photographic techniques, close-up and macro-photography and portraiture photography.

Guest Speakers

Positive Image frequently hosts guest speakers to give talks on all sorts of photography related subjects..

As well as in-person presentations, the use of Zoom enables us to invite speakers from outside of the local area including some of the leading specialists in various fields of photography.

In the past, we have heard all about street and travel photography, shooting close-ups, wildlife photography and portraiture, amongst many other topics. This variety helps us to ensure that there is always something of interest for everybody, whilst providing encouragement to consider different approaches and subject matter.

Group Outings

We host several group outings during the year, visiting a wide range of attractions and locations, including the Peak District, urban landscapes, and inspiring architectural sites.

These outings are a fantastic way to learn from one another and offer an opportunity to experiment with the unfamiliar.

Homework Assignments

Throughout the club year, we set several homework assignments  to encourage members to take photographs relating to a particular theme in order to try out new photographic techniques and new photographic skills. These challenges may be related to a recent talk, or a programme theme which is often chosen by our members. Members images are shared and reviewed during club nights, with the option of constructive feedback for members as desired.

Competition

Whilst Positive Image is not a competition focused club, we do run an annual competition in which everyone is encouraged to participate. Members receive valuable and encouraging feedback on their images, provided by an external judge. During recent years club members have also put forward images for selection at the annual Yorkshire Photographic Union exhibition. Advice and support is also available for those members who wish to apply for for formal photographic awards.

Social

Several events are held throughout the year to give members and opportunity to relax, chat and enjoy one another’s company. Not all involve a camera, but there is always a chance to catch up on the latest tips and tricks, or seek advice about a challenging photographic experience.
